From Human Capital to Organisational Capabilities:Enabling the Strategic Leap for HR and Business Leaders

Amidst the unprecedented global upheaval in a century, compounded by the profound impacts of the post-pandemic era, the international political and economic environment has become increasingly complex. Market competition continues to intensify, and cross-sector disruptions are emerging constantly. Simultaneously, technological waves—such as AI and generative technologies (e.g., ChatGPT), the Internet of Things, new energy sources, and new materials—are accelerating their evolution. The values and work styles of the new generation of employees are also continuously reshaping organisational logic. The intertwining of multiple internal and external variables presents enterprises with unprecedented uncertainties and challenges, while also nurturing significant opportunities for structural transformation and leapfrog development.

Against this backdrop, shifting from a focus solely on talent competition to systematically managing human capital and organisational capabilities has become a key factor in determining long-term competitiveness. Whether an organisation can effectively align strategy with execution depends on clear organisational design, effective incentive and collaboration mechanisms, and management and leadership approaches that activate individual and team potential. In such a complex and ever-changing environment, relying solely on traditional “Six Modules and Three Pillars” operations are no longer sufficient to meet enterprise development needs. HR managers and leadership must jointly elevate strategic vision and systemic thinking, actively participate in organisational development and strategy implementation, and drive continuous evolution and transformation.

In response to these challenges, the Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) programme was created. It systematically integrates cutting-edge interdisciplinary theories and practices from international fields such as human resource management, organisational development, change management, business management, and psychology. The curriculum is closely tailored to the realities and developmental needs of Chinese enterprises, guiding participants toward an overarching perspective of “managing human capital and organisational capabilities". Through a learning approach that combines theory and practice, students will achieve breakthroughs in cognitive height, systemic thinking, and professional depth, becoming key roles capable of supporting strategic implementation, activating organisational effectiveness, and leading transformative change.

Programme Design

By weaving the systemic view and methodologies of Organisation Development (OD) throughout the entire program design, integrated with business management perspectives and forward-looking lens towards digital and intelligent trends, interdisciplinary strengths are leveraged to elevate holistic practice of strategic HR Management.

Testimonials

I always believe in lifelong learning and strive to learn from teachers, classmates, and practical experiences. During the two years of studying the Strategic Human Resources Management Programme at the HKU ICB, I have gained a lot. The course focuses on Organizational Development (OD), integrating systems thinking, business perspectives, and the trend of digitization, which has refreshed my understanding of human resources. Combining financial knowledge and AI tools, I have delved into how to enhance organizational effectiveness. In the future, competition is not just about technological advancement but also about organizational capabilities. I am grateful to HKU ICB for providing a forward-thinking, systematic, and integrated learning platform that helps us build stronger organizational capabilities for businesses.

HKU ICB is composed of outstanding scholars and industry experts, who not only have profound academic attainments, but also have rich practical experience. In the classroom, they provide us with a deeper knowledge and understanding of various areas of strategic human resource management through lively lectures and rich case sharing. At the same time, they also paid great attention to interaction and communication with students, encouraging us to put forward our own views and questions, and patiently answering our doubts. In addition, in the course of studying the ICB SHRM programme at HKU, I also met a group of classmates from different industries. We learnt and progressed together, and built deep friendships through mutual exchanges and classroom co-operation. From the moment we stepped into this world-renowned institution, we started a profound and comprehensive amazing journey of academic and professional development, with love in our hearts, to the mountains and the seas.

In the academic hall of the HKU ICB, the school motto of "Sapientia et Virtus (which conveys the application of knowledge to the necessities of life, subject to moral restraints)" is like a guiding light, illuminating the path of our dual exploration of knowledge and character. In the classroom, students are like bright stars, radiating the glitter of thirst for knowledge, and we inspire each other to pursue the depth and breadth of knowledge; after class, we are like-minded friends, discussing academics, sharing life lessons, encouraging each other, and growing together after tea. In this learning journey, I have not only gained knowledge, but also sincere friendship. The HKU ICB also provides the opportunity for inter-disciplinary learning, which has given me a new understanding of understanding the world. Learning no longer stops in the classroom. In the pursuit of "lifelong learning", I will continue to keep an open mind, improve my knowledge, expand myself, influence others, and achieve a better self.

Studying at HKU ICB is a lucky and surprising experience. I am fortunate to meet every teacher here, who not only teaches us and broadens our horizons, but also transmits the power of lifelong learning to us and influences us; I am fortunate to make friends with fellow students across disciplines and regions, and help each other to make progress in every classroom exchange and extracurricular practice; and I am also fortunate to see my own growth and metamorphosis, which makes me more calm and brave in the face of the unknown and in the face of adversity. I believe that one day, when the song of "I am Virtuous" echoes in your ears, this place, which carries the weight of history and the pursuit of true knowledge, will also let you meet a better you.
