Challenges and Responses for Managers in the AI Era

IPM

As AI technology advances at an unprecedented pace, managers face both challenges and opportunities. AI is transforming business models, workflows, and decision-making processes, with large-scale models like DeepSeek and OpenAI already taking over many tasks. However, the true key to maintaining a competitive edge lies in whether managers possess forward-thinking perspectives and proactively drive organisational change. While AI’s primary role is to enhance efficiency and reduce costs, it has also intensified market competition. For managers, the pressing question is how to effectively leverage AI to help their organisations stand out.

Management is a discipline that thrives on practice, especially in today’s fast-changing business environment, where managers must respond swiftly to problems and challenges. To support this, the IPM programme offers critical insights into business model innovation and AI applications, equipping managers with the tools to enhance their adaptability and effectiveness.

The Value of "Practical Management, Real-World Consulting"

The effectiveness of management stems from practice. In the AI era, theoretical knowledge alone is insufficient to address complex business challenges. "Practical Management, Real-World Consulting" is a proven approach to meet this need. Rooted in the educational philosophy of management guru Henry Mintzberg, this concept emphasises the integration of theory and practice, with a results-driven focus that helps managers improve their competencies and solve real-world problems.

As Mintzberg aptly stated: "To develop more experienced managers, education should revolve around practice, shaping modern management talent." By examining challenges from a consulting perspective, managers gain a more objective understanding of issues and can devise actionable solutions. Moreover, the programme places a strong emphasis on both effectiveness and innovation, enabling managers to pursue short-term performance goals while fostering the innovation needed for long-term sustainable development.

Through case studies, simulation exercises, and interdisciplinary learning, participants develop a diverse skill set to navigate the complexities of the AI era. This holistic approach equips managers to tackle multifaceted challenges with confidence and strategic insight.

Bridging Practice with Theory to Enhance Management Excellence

The IPM Programme at The University of Hong Kong Institute for China Business (HKU ICB) is designed to "elevate strategic thinking and deepen practical management expertise." It seamlessly blends business theory with real-world applications, enabling managers to address practical challenges as part of their learning journey. Participants begin with specific challenges from their own organisations, leveraging classroom knowledge and collaborative discussions with peers from diverse backgrounds to test ideas and develop innovative solutions. These solutions are then applied directly to their professional work, delivering tangible results.

The programme places particular emphasis on project analysis and problem-solving in the AI era. Unlike traditional MBA programmes that prioritise theory, the IPM programme focuses on practical capabilities, empowering participants to view challenges from a broader strategic perspective and devise targeted solutions. Under the guidance of expert mentors, participants conduct case studies and analyses tailored to their own organisational challenges, gaining hands-on experience while building the confidence and strategic acumen needed to tackle business challenges.

By combining theory with practice, the programme enables participants to enhance their management skills and create lasting competitive advantages for their organisations amidst the AI revolution.

Navigating Change in a Rapidly Evolving Era

In this fast-moving era, the growth and learning of managers have become pivotal to organisational success. This experience has not only broadened my knowledge boundary, but also inspired me to have unlimited vision and firm belief in the future business world. I believe that as long as there is a dream in my heart, there will be a road under my feet, and I will write my own business legend with practical actions.”

吕佩珈 (IPM CD11) — 壳牌中国 南区FM 经理

"The word "addiction" is what a senior student from the University of Hong Kong mentioned when she shared her learning experience before I enrolled in the programme. So I was curious and slightly puzzled. It was not until six months into the programme that I understood what the state of addiction was. So what is it? In the class, case studies are used to help you perceive the world, perceive yourself, and upgrade your perception. Through a lot of discussions and training, different perspectives, different views, and different experiences, a variety of different thinking is brought together, which makes me very inspired and enlightened. Aiming for an A+ on every assignment requires reading and looking up a lot of materials, repeated self-affirmation, denial, re-correction and then finalisation. The process of transformation and growth is painful but beautiful as if a tight string is always pulling you forward, urging you on with a growth mindset, allowing you to become more refined, energetic and confident. I'd say that's a great addictive state to be in! Through practical application, I realised that I should have been exposed to HKU earlier, thanks to a group of excellent teachers with years of experience in international business management with a global perspective and wonderful lectures, which upgraded my cognition and broadened the breadth and depth of my thinking! While gaining knowledge, I am happy to have made friends with a group of like-minded students. I am grateful to have met you!" Thank you HKU!”

刘连伟 (IPM GZ4) — 广州博纳信息科技有限公司 应用事业部总监

"As the operator for Luckin Coffee in the Shenzhen region, I once thought that digital operations and the logic of hit products were all there was to brand management. It wasn’t until I engaged with teachers and classmates in the HKU ICB IPM programme that I realized: while we chase the benefits of traffic on the front line, a complete coordinate system for sustainable brand development has already been established here. What impressed me most about this course is that it teaches us to "look up and see the road" through the rigorous academic framework of the University of Hong Kong, while also allowing us to learn from real business cases to "keep our heads down and drive." If, like me, you are seeking balance amidst the pressures of KPIs and strategic anxiety, the IPM programme is that precise instrument that enables you to see both the microscope and the telescope clearly."
